Toss out the canned beans. You can make homemade beans if you follow these simple steps. I use a crock pot for this easy dish that feeds all week. I made this last night, and woke up this morning to a house smelling like smokey goodness.
- 6 cups dried pinto beans (rinsed)
- 1-2 smoked ham hocks
- 1 white onion chopped
- 3 tablespoons of taco seasoning
- 1 tablespoons salt
Put all the ingredients in a crock pot and cover with 3 inches of water. Turn the crock pot to the low setting and let it cook for 8 hours. Go to bed. Wake up on Sunday morning to homemade beans.

Beans can be the main dish or a side dish during the week. They are full of protein and fiber. My kids love them. I usually make this once a month and freeze bags as back up when I don’t have time to cook dinner. This is going to be a busy week for me so I prepped this dish for week night meals.
I’ll turn a pot if this into Grandma’s refried beans for burritos on Monday night. We may have Taco Tuesday with bean tacos (my kids love it). Taco salad on Wednesday and by Thursday we have had enough beans. We may go Italian food by then;)
